Indiana's rules
Indiana has its own disposal statute. Indiana Code 24-4-14 requires businesses and government agencies to dispose of unencrypted personal information — Social Security numbers, account numbers, driver's license numbers and the like — by shredding, incinerating, mutilating, erasing or otherwise making it unreadable. The Indiana Attorney General enforces it, and Indiana regulators have brought actions against businesses caught throwing customer files in dumpsters. Indiana's breach-notification law adds a duty to notify residents when paper records are exposed. The federal rules apply on top.
